Our journey starts at the beautiful old port of Marseille, from where we enter the oldest neighbourhood in France, the “Le Panier”. Going through Marseille monuments, you’ll see the new Hotel Dieu, which opened for the “Marseille Provence 2013” event, during which Marseille was labelled as the European capital of culture.
Through the ascent of Accoules, our guide will lead you to the “Place des Moulins” and will tell you about its magnificent history along with answering your questions. The tour finishes at the “Le Panier” district, only a few steps away from the Mucem museum, the new icon of Marseille, which is the most visited place in the city, thanks to the modern architecture linked to the Fort St. Jean. This monument presently offers many beautiful exhibitions and shows. This tour will help you to understand and witness the modernization process that has been taking place in Marseille since the last few years.

Angie was a fabulous , friendly guide. Very knowledgeable about Marseille and the Vieux Port but also made the tour fun. It was a lot of information but she got it across in a very engaging way. This was a great walking tour! Our (Brazilian) guide spoke very good and clear English and his knowledge and stories were excellent. Although he said it would take 2 hours it was probably closer to 3 hours. He went at a pace that suited everyone and paused in the shady places as it was such a hot day. We learnt heaps and had a good time. My husband and I would thoroughly recommend this walking tour.

Angie, our walking tour guide, was fabulous. She was full of interesting facts, entertaining and captivating – so much so she managed to keep a group of around 30 of us with her, hanging onto her every word. The tour itself is worth doing early in your time in Marseille as it gives you chance to get your bearings and find key spots. There were also plenty of really helpful tips about where to get buses, where to go for food, how much to pay for certain things.
The tour is free. YES FREE! However, the guides work on tips, so do take some cash for them – it’s worth it 🙂

Showing good humour he picked up on the reputation the city has and that we could be taking our life’s in our hands doing the walk.
We had heard negative things about the city, our perception was completely changed doing this tour, the old town and port are really interesting and felt very safe to walk around.
Ezekiel provided a good depth of historical content and was fun at the same time.
He provided some very good tips, we caught the local bus to Notre Dam which saved us a significant sum of money against the small tourist La Petite train.

We always seek out a free walking tour on a city break as its a perfect way to get an introduction to the city from those that know it best. Our guide was the Brazilian Yam, who clearly loved Marseille so much that he became passionate about sharing its stories with visitors. He interacted and kept everyone engaged, even pitching countries against in each in mini pop quizzes. The group was small enough to manage without it looking like he was trying to herd cats, and he used a radio mic which meant we could always hear his commentary.
I felt that I understood the much-misunderstood city of Marseille much more at the end of this tour. He certainly didn’t shy away from informing us of the city’s shady past, of its unwanted standing as the second worse city in France for crime rates, its poverty and mafia connections. But since 2013, and its award of European Capital of Culture, the city has significantly cleaned up its act. Yam gives us the lowdown on the areas to avoid if travelling independently, but on this free walking tour we follow a very well-worn tourist path.
My only suggestion would be to include suggestions of public toilets within the vicinity of the meeting point. It was a fellow tour customer that made a suggestion to us, and my husband dutifully went off for a tour of the city’s bathrooms before finding one that was functioning at Centre Commercial Centre Bourse. This was actually close to the Greek ruins stop on the tour!
The Marseille Free Walking Tour is an excellent introduction to the city’s history, culture and politics, and the best way to truly appreciate the transformation the city has undergone in the past 10 years. Make sure you tip generously at the end!

We had a fantastic walking tour with Santiago. As we’re Italian, we had previously booked a tour in English, after we decided to do in Spanish and it was a very suitable choice. Santiago was clear, soaking quite slowly so that we could understand him. He gave us a lot of tips and a more deep, anthropological view on the city. We spent almost 3 hours walking and understood a lot of things about this city’s soul, it was useful making the tour our first day staying in Marseille so we could follow Santiago ‘s suggestion.
