Our journey starts at the beautiful old port of Marseille, from where we enter the oldest neighbourhood in France, the “Le Panier”. Going through Marseille monuments, you’ll see the new Hotel Dieu, which opened for the “Marseille Provence 2013” event, during which Marseille was labelled as the European capital of culture.
Through the ascent of Accoules, our guide will lead you to the “Place des Moulins” and will tell you about its magnificent history along with answering your questions. The tour finishes at the “Le Panier” district, only a few steps away from the Mucem museum, the new icon of Marseille, which is the most visited place in the city, thanks to the modern architecture linked to the Fort St. Jean. This monument presently offers many beautiful exhibitions and shows. This tour will help you to understand and witness the modernization process that has been taking place in Marseille since the last few years.

Angie was a fabulous , friendly guide. Very knowledgeable about Marseille and the Vieux Port but also made the tour fun. It was a lot of information but she got it across in a very engaging way. It lasted just over 2 hours and we went into the back streets with regular stops and talks. My husband and I really enjoyed it and it kick started our 2 day visit to Marseille. This was a great walking tour! Our (Brazilian) guide spoke very good and clear English and his knowledge and stories were excellent. Although he said it would take 2 hours it was probably closer to 3 hours. He went at a pace that suited everyone and paused in the shady places as it was such a hot day. We learnt heaps and had a good time. My husband and I would thoroughly recommend this walking tour.

Angie, our walking tour guide, was fabulous. She was full of interesting facts, entertaining and captivating – so much so she managed to keep a group of around 30 of us with her, hanging onto her every word. The tour itself is worth doing early in your time in Marseille as it gives you chance to get your bearings and find key spots. There were also plenty of really helpful tips about where to get buses, where to go for food, how much to pay for certain things.
The tour is free. YES FREE! However, the guides work on tips, so do take some cash for them – it’s worth it 🙂
